POWER STEERING

Power Steering Issues.

Aug 19, 2007
Ever since I had the power steering fitted I have had issues with it. Always a thorn in my side from leaking pump to fitting extactors, we won't go there though.
So 1st up, I have noticed that most posts state that the 2F block had the holes in the block from around 1979 as shown here in a photo I borrowed form PabloCruis's thread on IH8MUD

Now I have had a look at my block and being a late 80 model yes it has them, but here is the thing, as far as I can see all right hand drive 40's and 60's have their power steering pump on the drivers side and use the bolt holes off the head as their are none on that side of the block. Except for mine, for some reason the PO moved the alternator (sensible as it keeps it out of the mud) from where it usually is on a right hand drive to where the alternators usually sit in the USA.

This meant when the power steering conversion was done they were not happy and tried to charge extra as their brackets had to be custom as did the hoses. I pointed out that my written quote was for a full conversion and he had said "No need to look they are all the same" at that he swallowed his extra costs.
I have noticed today while looking at a few issues with the 2F-ETI conversion a slight leak from the water pump gasket caused by the design of the power steering pump levering in on the two bolts used to fix the bracket and water pump grrrrrrrrr.

Now for those of you that are following my 2F-ETI build it's getting close to pulling the engine time, so I think this thorn should be once and for-all finally fixed.
Now even with an oil cooler this pump even after being stripped and rebuilt under load 35's at 6psi leaks. So do I switch to a different pump, maybe a GM with remote reservoir and a new bracket using the genuine holes or just source a genuine 2F power steering bracket which will have to come from the USA as there are none to suit that side here in Oz.

Well thanks to VTcruiser60 I have a genuine power steering bracket winging it's way from the USA.

Today I picked up a rebuilt GM/Holden powersteering pump $80AU

Now to just fit the two together. One main advantage to this pump is it uses a separate reservoir moving it away from the headers and turbo.
Once the modifications are complete I'll post up.

Power steering bracket arrived today. Now how do you usually tension these?

All ready for a new coat of paint.

psbracket2

Looking good too the G/M pump lines up with both the mounting holes and only need spacers to center the pull to the right spot for the V Belt.
Just have to fit the pulley to it and figure out how to tension it.

All done more than can be said for the truck.

You will have to have either a smog pump or an idler pulley for the crank-to-water pump belt. Someone on here makes one, that I bought for mine, but I can't remember who. You can probably do a search on smog pump replacement or idler pulley to find out...end quote

Just what I needed, currently I run 3 short belts one to the power steering one to the alternator and one to the Air compressor. All I need now then is two belts C and D and use the alternator to tension the system.
Tks

Well some things just work and some don't this is one of those occassions that does!
Picked up an new Stainless shouldered bolt yesterday, actually wanted 2 but only had one in stock so that's on back order, so for now using a Allen cap in one hole.
Well what do you know a GM power steering pump for a Commodore VT and more (most common car on the road here) has the same spacing for the bolts. It fits straight into the 2F power steering bracket. Off the shelf here fully re-co'd $80AU. All I need to do is space the pump to suit the pulley with a few washers or I may even machine up a bronze bush as a spacer. All too easy, the fluid reservoir will be moved to the opposite side away from the heat of the upcoming turbo and exhaust manifold.
One other issue is to fit the pulley to the pump which I will figure out when I swap them over during the engine swap.

Started work on the conversion to a G/M power steering pump today, removed the old Toyota pump and it's custom bracket that was made when I had the power steering added. Less said about that the better.

psbracket8

Pressed the mounting off the G/M pump for the pulley just leaving the shaft which is slightly bigger than the Toyota one. The G/M is a press fit without a keyway as opposed to the Toyota one. So I will machine the center out of the Toyota pulley to a press fit.
Another small hitch was the new bracket interfered with the Pacemaker extractors manifold plate, so out with the grinder just to shave a little off it. This won't be an issue when the new 2F-ETI goes in but due to a change of plan I need to fit it to the old 2F for a couple of months.

ps

The holes for the genuine bracket were all full of $hit so I scrapped as much of the mud out as possible and washed out with WD 40 before re tapping them for the new bolts. Also fitted 2 new bolts to the water pump where the old bracket mounted.

With the bracket fitted the G/M pump needs to sit all the way back for the pulley to be inline so I only require 2 spacers each 20mm to sit in front of the pump.
You can also see now how close the extractors are, but no great stress.

2x20mm Aluminum spacers in place. It lines up perfectly just the picture makes it look out of line.
ps5

Will have to make up some sort of dummy pulley to tension the water pump as I don't have a smog pump.
Time to search.

Went through the box of bits from the 3FE I had left over, more bits of bracket than you could poke a stick at. Found this adjustable tensioning pulley attached to a larger bracket, a bit of messing around untill I found which way it suited best. Need to make a spacer and a flat bar with 8mm holes to tie it in to the power steering bracket. Also needs a new bearing.

ps7

Ok spacer for the bottom mounting made, new bearing plus one spare, and a short strap to fix it to the power steering pump out of flat bar. Just need to get the power steering cooler and reservoir now and connect it all up and see what we have.

All done!
Power steering reservoir is off a Mitsubishi Magna, the wreckers are full of them.
Belts fitted and tensioned.
Power steering cooler in front of the radiator.
Results are great, at idol it works perfect, far better than the Toyota pump that needed a few revs even after a full rebuild.
The G/M pump is 4 times cheaper than the Toyota pump to replace works better at idol and hopefully does not leak every time I give it a good work out off road, only time will tell there.
On the whole very good result.

First trip off road and all I can say is I'm stupid for not doing this 3 years ago.
If it's not right fix it don't put up with it, the G/M pump did not leak and works better at tick over with the tyre presure at 20 PSI.
We are at competition on the Nov 16,17&18 where we will be running 6 rear and 8 front PSI. This will be a reall test.
For now one happy camper.
